Dedicated to your impact

Mission and Vision

I work with philanthropists who desire to measurably improve their giving. Through doing so, we collaboratively create a world of decreased suffering and increased flourishing for all beings.

Values

Impactful

Good philanthropy should value impact above all else, and strive to fund nonprofits who operate similarly.

Evidence Based

The discerning philanthropist seeks out the leading research in the field before determining the best solution to a given problem.

Beneficiary Centered

The best interventions will always prioritize the welfare of beneficiaries, not the personal passions of the philanthropist.

Scope Sensitive

Good philanthropy acknowledges that saving ten lives really is ten times better than saving one.

Measurable

True impact can and should be measured, even between seemingly disparate causes and organizations.

Joyful

A joyful philanthropist is inspired to give more and give better. All that’s needed is to discover the spark.

Theory of Change

When you awaken more philanthropists to the amount of good they can do,

Connect them with high quality research and high-impact funding opportunities,

Effective beneficiaries receive more funding, reducing suffering and increasing human flourishing.

About Will Troy

Prior to founding Coppice Philanthropy, Will spent ten years in the sustainable agriculture and international development sectors, where he worked on the ground in the US and Latin America with small NGOs, impact investors, and philanthropists seeking to increase their impact. After witnessing firsthand the deep disconnect between funders and the nonprofit organizations they support, Will decided to dedicate his time strictly to the philanthropic sector. Driven by a deep desire to improve the world, Will founded Coppice Philanthropy in order to awaken philanthropists to the true impact they can have in the world, an impact greater than they could possible imagine. He is based in Santa Cruz, California.

Will holds an MA in Public Administration, a BA in Anthropology, an MBA-Essentials Certificate from the London School of Economics, and is a 21/64 Certified Advisor. Will has taken the Giving What We Can pledge, the Generation Pledge, and manages his own DAF through which he funds the most high-impact opportunities he can find.

“Coppicing” is a traditional European land management practice, where the forester cuts back a tree in order to stimulate new growth out of the still living base of the tree. It is sustainable, efficient, and still practiced today.

Coppice Philanthropy seeks to do the same with the philanthropic sector—stimulate the shoots of new growth, building off of the successes and lessons learned through philanthropy’s long history. We hope you’ll join us in doing so.

What is a coppice anyway?
